Read the play “The Dilemma of a Ghost” carefully and take “Notes towards a Performance Theory of Orature ” as reference. Now, imagine that you’re directing a production of that play, and explain how you would stage one or two specific scenes from the play. Your directorial choices should advance an interpretation of the playâ€â€a thesisâ€â€which you may express through gesture, blocking, choreography, casting, acting style, performance space (e.g., an outdoor production), or design (set, lights, costume, sound, video projection, etc.). You have an unlimited budget, and you are not constrained to honor the playwright’s dialogue or stage directions, although you should fully explain any adaptations you wish to make to the text. Your essay should cite the play, and may also cite secondary sources if they help to support or explain your directorial choices. Approximately 1,500 words.
Here are some instructions and the outline showing how I want the paper’s structure and points to be:
Some interesting theories about individual and collaborative memories are reflected in this play. The conflicts and mutual influences between the traditional African memories of Ato’s family (especially his grandma) and Eu’s modern memories, cause confusions and disturbing feelings to emerge among them. “Shall I go to cape coast or Elmina (towns in Ghana from where Africans were taken away as slaves to north America” This lyric that appears repeatedly reveals the dilemma.
Please see “Between Memory and History: Les Lieux de Memoire “, maurice halbwachs’s view on collective memory, and “Transformations between History and Memory” by Aleida Assmann.
So based on that form an introduction part introducing the theories about collective/individual memories and cultural identities that this play reflects.
Then place the thesis
Main thesis be like (Actually should begin like that) (refine this if you can find better words): I found that the Ambivalent recognition in identities is discussed as a very intriguing theme in the play, and it invite us to ponder and reflect on the integrating reasons behind it. In the first act of the play, we spot several characters bewildered inside for different reasons. The reasons can be sum into two. First, the conflict between Ghana’s traditional ideals about gender roles and the underlying discrimination and woman’s true values. Second, the conflict between Traditional and modern ideologies. I will use light, costume, and sound to showcase the conflicts and externalize the character’s inner confusion and unsureness.
Then the first sub-thesis and the first section:
Ghana’s traditional ideals about gender roles and the underlying discrimination is conflicted with woman’s true values, thus the Ambivalent recognitions in identity in multiple characters are ignited. Analyze that conflict, drawing to certain contents of the play that you have directorial plannings on. And then goes, To underline/demonstrate/showcase/EMPHASIZE this conflict and this inner confusion/uneasiness/unsureness, I decide to bring forth what directing choices. Also explain how the directorial choices help to achieve the goal of showcasing this conflict here and externalize the character’s inner confusion and unsureness(theatrical methodology involved).
Same goes with the conflict between Traditional and modern ideologies. (Write that into refined sub-thesis.) When the two ideologies and cultural memories collide, The “modern camp†feel doubted about whether this (tradition) is the origin they’re searching. And the “traditional camp†feel that the “modern camp†is almost incompatible, as they rarely share similar values (tribe, pregnant), and are detached from their history and culture (As the song suggest in the line cape coast, these African Americans nowadays were descendants from those that were taken away from cape coast as slaves. (Expand the analysis drawing to the texts based on which you have directorial planning on ).
And at last in the conclusion, conclude all this.
Again, narrating from the beginning to the end is not the right structure. We do want to go into details like that, but we are building an essay in the end, in which sub-these goes after the main thesis as further explanations, as I planned out.
Read the play “The Dilemma of a Ghost” and take “Notes towards a Performance Theory of Orature ” as reference
