ANA has been constantly the voice of nurses and their requirements since 1896. In a period of tremendous healthcare reforms, ANA is protecting the demands of medical consumers and nurses. It also advocates for the nursing experience and plays a fundamental role in creating policy initiatives. The evidence-based practice in ANA lies in its mission statement. Its mission statement is to “lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care” (ANA, 2009). This statement is evident in its scope of practice. ANA ensures that all the nurses follow a critical thinking approach referred to as the nursing process. It entails numerous evidence-based practice elements (ANA, 2019). It comprises assessment, diagnosis, results, documentation, preparation, application, and evaluation.
All registered nurses must gather pertinent data about the patients and their unique situations regarding assessment. The diagnosis implies evaluating the collected data to understand problems and testing. Outcome identification means identifying the expected results helpful in planning personalized care for patients. Planning entails developing a plan that determines techniques to attain desired and measurable results. Finally, implementation means using the identified program effectively, and evaluation assesses the patient’s development towards achieving goals and outcomes (ANA, 2019).
The information I found on the ANA’s website has positively changed my perspective toward the agency. I have realized that healthcare organizations aim to attain personalized care for all the patients and constantly advocate for collecting data before implementing the care. Also, from its websites, I found that the healthcare organization supports an effective and professional work environment so that all registered nurses can offer quality care to all the patients. In addition, they utilize effective evidence-based practices to ensure that all nurses are not subjected to moral distress.OF
Evidence-based practice in nursing leads to better patient care. It incorporates data from clinical and research studies, nursing expertise, interventions, and patient outcomes. (Melnyk et al., 2010)
Many health care organizations have adopted and utilized Evidence-based practice approaches. Crabtree et al. (2016) mentions that nurses educated on the research and utilization of evidence-based practice approaches apply interventions that lead to better care for patients and better clinical outcomes.
Review of health care organization
The Healthcare organization I examined was the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(n.d.) SAMHSA organization is part of the national health and human services administration. It helps provide education about susbstance abuse and mental health disorders. It also provides treatment options and resources to decrease these conditions’ adverse effects on individuals and communities (SAMHSA.Org, n.d.)
On the SAMHSA website, under their programs tab. They mention evidence-based practice resource centers. The resource center information describes that it provides resources on any topic or condition a person may search for. The resource center also includes information about what evidence-based practice means and why they feel that evidence-based practice is a good approach. They also mention that evidence-based practice can change and expand. They make the best effort to provide the most up-to-date and current evidence-based practice approaches and education available.
View of the organization
After reviewing the website and its research approaches, I feel that they are a credible site. Its goal is to help individuals and communities through evidence-based practice, create awareness about mental health, and provide resources for those struggling. The approach of information, resources for help, programs they offer, and their dedication and descriptions of evidence-based practice gave me a favorable view of the organization.
As a postpartum nurse, there is a significant amount of education that is involved to prepare patients and their families for discharge. There has been talk amongst the nurses on our unit that more needs to be done to help provide education in the limited amount of time we have during their admission. Riverside Regional Medical Center, where I am employed has a busy labor unit that delivers over 2,000 babies a year. The quantity of postpartum education required by government and regulatory bodies, as well as that suggested by professional organizations, can be overwhelming, and short postpartum hospital stays leave nurses with little time to adequately meet a new mother’s learning needs (Buchko et al., 2012). The difficulties of providing postpartum and infant education point to the need for a more simplified and coordinated strategy that provides knowledge that mothers find valuable as they transition from hospital to home (Buchko et al., 2012).
One of the key methods in which the healthcare business obtains fresh insights is through data collection using various platforms. Data collection has grown in scope over time, allowing it to deliver on important problem areas and contribute to the development of a solution (Binani, 2019). In this scenario, data needs to be collected to assess reasons for time constraints, staffing concerns, education materials, and patient learning preferences. To collect this data, surveys could be given to patients about their discharge education and how comfortable they felt leaving the hospital. The staff could also be questioned about their thoughts on barriers to the discharge process. Overall, this data could be analyzed to come up with a more sufficient and effective method to provide all the education needed without overwhelming the patient at one time.
How a Nurse Leader could use this Information
Based on the results of the survey, nursing leadership can discuss ways to improve discharge instructions and come up with ways to provide individual patient education to new mothers in a way that is easy to remember. Another idea would be for the leadership team to reach out to other postpartum units and discuss various methods they find effective. Nursing leaders can then educate staff on the findings from the surveys and information found. Education methods could include staff meeting presentations, meeting minutes, and in-the-moment instructions (Adler et al., 2019). In conclusion, data could be collected and evaluated for better patient outcomes regarding patient discharge teaching.
High Rate of falls in the Medical surgical unit
Falls are a major problem in health care setting and each year millions of people fall to injury and hospitalization. Falls can happen anywhere in the nursing homes, hospitals, homes, public areas, and it continues to be problem which most hospitals see on regular basis. Falls can predispose one to complications like prolonged hospitalization, extra expenses to the individual, and the hospital. When you come to the hospitals, one out of five falls’ results in serious injuries such as fractured bones or various life-threatening trauma injuries because of falls according to Center for Diseases Control and prevention (n.d.). Most patient in the medical surgical units who undergo surgery like knee replacement may fall trying to get out of bed thereby causing injury on the left elbow trying to support himself or herself. Falls can cause serious injuries and even lead to death. There are factors that may contribute to falls such as age, medications, polypharmacy, confusion and cognitive impairments, certain health conditions, muscle weakness, clutter in the environment, alcohol, frequent use of bathroom, and history of falls
Fall data collection
Identifying the factors that can lead to falls are important in other to prevent falls. Therefore, it will be necessary to assess patients routinely in other to identify patients who are at risk for fall in other to prevent it. In such a scenario, the data required is to assess if the patient had a previous history of falls or prone to fall, which would help the nurse determine if it has ever happened again and what caused him to fall. It is also the duty of the nurse to check if the patient has more than one diagnosis or any condition that can lead to fall like hypotension. medications, polypharmacy, confusion. Awareness of the risk for fall is important for the patient and it is good to know if the patient is alert and oriented to own ability and able to know they are at risk of fall. Moreover, checking if the bed alarm is properly set, the bed is in low position, call lights is within reach and if the patient had non-skid socks are important data to put into consideration.
Knowledge derived from data
The data collected will help the nurse to know more about falls, acquire knowledge on the importance of educating patients and reminding them about fall risks and the importance of having fall prevention in place all the time during admission. According to (Choi et al, 2018). It is essential for most hospital to have fall risk assessment tools in place which will help to reduce related falls and injuries because most falls are preventable in the units. Patients who have altered mental status would require extra precautions, monitoring and having someone watching them more closely.
