Helpful Hints for Getting Started
When choosing an ethical issue, look for one that is currently being debated: Consider what you have heard, seen, or read online, on TV news, in newspapers, and at your workplace.
For a review of course content related to values (personal, professional, and institutional) refer to Unit 3 Values Clarification and Development.
For a review of course content related to ethical frameworks, models, theories, or ethical principles, refer to Unit 4 Ethical Theories and Decision-Making in Nursing.
In assignment 2, you must choose an ethical issue that is interests you and is of importance to society. Your first goal in the discussion is to clearly articulate the ethical issue/dilemma you are going to discuss and explaining the importance of the issue in society. This goes beyond an ethical topic like MAiD, or Mandatory Vaccinations for Healthcare Workers. These issues become ethical issues/dilemmas when there is a decision to be made and there are two equally right or wrong, good or bad solutions or options to address the ethical issue. This is what the remainder of your discussion will focus on, so you need to give this aspect of the assignment critical thought and be sure you clearly articulate the “ethical issueâ€.
You will be presenting a balanced view on the ethical issue, articulating your position in a well evidenced discussion including the personal, and professional/institutional values underpinning your position. The balanced view requires you presenting the opposing view, supported by literature evidence as well. You are expected to also present the personal, and professional/institutional values you speculate underpin the opposing position. I recommend including the values discussion with the discussion of each position, as the relevance of the values identified needs to be clearly expressed as part of the discussions. When students try to discuss the values separately this often is not effectively done. Understanding and articulating these values is a core requirement in this discussion and this gets missed often or falls short of being a comprehensive analysis of the values as expected.
You then choose an ethical framework, model, theory, or set of ethical principles that you will apply to the ethical issue demonstrating how you came to your decision. This requires first introducing the ethical framework, model, theory, or set of ethical principles and defining what these are (where they originate and the relevance to ethical practice) and identifying how these are utilized in ethical decision-making. Second, you need to discuss the actual application of ethical framework, model, theory, or set of ethical principles you choose to the ethical issue discussed in your paper, identifying how you came to your final position. A brief summary concisely summarizing why your position is the best position on this issue-( this is a summary that is separate from the conclusion to the paper) is required prior to the formal conclusion to your paper.
Well done assignments are ones that have written a paper, that discusses these assignment criteria, in this order, clearly addressing each of the assignment criteria as the main points forming the body of the discussion.
What is necessary to present a balanced view in this assignment, is to identify the two equally compelling courses of action for the ethical issue. From there presenting each course of action as a position. The course of action you feel is right (the best choice), is presented as your position, including the underlying values that support your position. Followed by the other course of action, presented as the opposing position, including the values you speculate underpin this position. Both positions must be presented with literature evidence to support the arguments on both sides.
